there is a strange stone face

dating from the Dark Ages

above the old door of Kilcatherine Church near Eyeries

Three Castle Head, Mizen

that some attribute to a pagan cat goddess

The Healy Pass

others link it to the ancient worship of snakes

its origins are not certain

but the site itself predates the 12th century

Beara

and there is an old stone cross

that might be the oldest in Ireland:

Kilcatherine Cemetery
