We were on 5-km lockdown in Crumlin, Dublin inner-city, strictly enforced

and it made me dream of an old Czech city, Telč

Crumlin is grey on grey

Telč, a technicolour dreamscape

a baroque layer cake.. I could think only of Mr Kipling French Fancies from my childhood

and Český Krumlov, a couple of hours away

has a garret full of old marionettes

like the forgotten attic of a master puppet maker

they swing from the rafters

Czech stop-motion films, marionettes

I’ve always loved them – unearthly but with a very human quality

uncanny

two hundred of them hang from the beams of St Jobst Church

in old Český Krumlov, deepest Bohemia

Telc is an amazing place. I had the chance to visit the former Czechoslovakia before the fall of Communism back in the mid-“80s: what a trip!
